Lost Coin Class Notes 5/22/07

Beginning meditation: sit without words, without dualities. As soon as words come up, restrict them arising in the mind, go back to a wordless state.

Elena played her flute and finishes the modes. Major (universally elicits happiness) and minor scales (elicits sadness).

We are under laws and they effect us all the same way. It is a mystery why it works that way. We need to understand that we work under certain laws and understand the laws and we begin to understand what we can and can't change.

Responding to Suggestion and Relaxation: Eliciting a relaxed or hypnotic state: responding to Daniels suggestion and visualizations. He took us through several experiences of visualizations/relaxation and there appeared to be a profound relaxing effect on the class. Gurdjieff talks about human beings being Law Conformable: for example, doing certain things will help you sink deeper into relaxation. To induce mild and deepen hypnotic states: 1. Describe things with some detail visually in the physical universe. 2. Make breaks or pauses in speech at unpredicted places. The emptiness that the pause allows, makes one sink deeper into a more relaxed state. 3. A soft calm tone of voice, slowly paced, with the softer and kinder allowing the individual to go deeper.

Law of Three

Everything has an (1) affirming, (2) denying and (3) neutralizing effect. The Law of three can be found in many places such as trinity and other spiritual traditions. We see everything in terns of duality and understand things from that perspective. For example, we understand 'tall' in relationship to 'short', can't have understanding of 'life' without understanding of 'death'.

Neutralizing side is not a compromise between affirming and denying but provides something beside the dualistic state: it is 'suchness', 'enlightenment', mid/heart. The most radical is that all thoughts are that, just thoughts and can't stand on their own. What is the one thing that stands on it's own? Your mind/being..it encompasses it all.

Daniel recited the Heart Sutra: Mind is emptiness, emptiness is form, etc? (please find this reference and read on your own)

Everything in the world is the whole trinity. Neutral ground is from which the other two arise. We live in a sea of yes/no, right/wrong, but need to understand that is not the ultimate truth. Meditation allows duality to fall away, practice allowing the emotional center to not attach to the dualities. More practice of meditation allows that 'something else' to grow so we not so easily fall into our opinions.

When listening/looking at octaves in music, there is a shortening between the third and seventh step.

How this is meaningful is that it implies that nothing we do ever is a straight line. These shocks don't allow us to accomplish what we set out to accomplish. Everything will turn on itself and can become the opposite of
itself.

At the two shocks need to be aware of:
   Negative emotions
Not being awake, objectivity to the self.

If you do these two things (observe negative emotions and self-remember) then you can complete an octave.

The connection between Law of Three and Self-Observation, don't allow self to be drawn into duality of right/wrong When we allow ourselves to go into the negative emotions or he duality it prevents us from achieving what we want and lulls us to sleep. At the experience of a shock, buying into negative emotions and not self-observing you are often sopped doing w/achieving what you want to do and loose your objectivity.

The teacher's job is to give you shocks at the right time to further your growth.

Keep meditating regularly, look at negativity and self-remembering.
